Pine tracks

So long ago, I asked you to guess what made these tracks. I said I'd post the answer next Sunday, but instead, I entirely forgot. So here is the answer, a few weeks late. They were made by a pine cone, rolling along on the ground. When I first saw it, I thought maybe it was made by some kind of snake!

Tapping
I set out two maple taps today in a red maple (no sugar maples in my yard). The sap seems to be running well, I can't wait to boil it!

Summing it up
Here are 31 photos from the month of January, 2010. Click on the image so that you can see it full sized and do it justice! The moon photo I promised you is the second one up, on the far right. I promise that I did not download that picture off the web! It was shot by me at 11 o'clock at night and my fingers are still frozen enough to prove it.

In broad nightlight....
There was a great moon out last night. According to SpaceWeather, it was 14% wider and 30% brighter then your average moon. It was also much, much colder than the average tempature this week so I took this photo from the living room window.
I used a 15 second exposure, but this is really what it looked like. I also took a picture of the moon on an 80x zoom, which you can see tomorrow.

Frozen wonder
I took this photo the day after I got my new camera. I love how the water frothed and bubbled beneath the ice of a stream.
